Starting a home-based business is exciting! But its’ important to remember that IT IS A BUSINESS and there will always be something requiring your attention. Here’s some tips to keep you focused on your quest and help make your home-based business a success.
1.
Work a set schedule. I know, one of the reasons you started a home-based business is to have more time to spend with family, or taking a nap, or playing golf, etc, etc… If the necessary work gets neglected, you’ll soon be looking for a new job!
2.
Set up an office area. You can't run a business from a card table in the Family Room. A successful business requires a fully equipped home office. If you have an extra bedroom, convert it into office space. If you don’t, partition off some private area.
3.
Professionalism. Yes, you can run your home business in your pajamas. You just can’t let your customers know that you just rolled out of the “sack”! Always maintain a professional approach when answering the phone, sending correspondence or dealing directly with customers.
4.
Advertise. To be successful in any business, the people you’re trying to reach have to know that you are out there. You don’t need to spend a ton of money on it, but it has to be done!
5.
Investigate the applicable tax laws. Take the time now to discuss your options with your accountant or with another qualified professional who can advise you about your taxes, tax law and your particular tax situation.
6.
Check with your local planning / business commission. Make sure there are no ordinances, restrictions or zoning laws that will prevent you from running a business from your home.
7.
Develop a Business Plan. Businesses of all sizes should develop and implement a business plan, not only as an evaluation tool but, also as a roadmap to success.
8.
Exploit the Internet. The Internet is the single best way for a small business to reach out to prospective customers. Even if your business is “non-tech” in nature, you need a website that can function as an online brochure for your company.
9.
Do some research. I know that you think your idea is unique. I’m sorry, but its’ probably not! That doesn’t mean that you can’t pursue it; it means that you need to do some research on the market-place and your competition. After you find out what they’re doing, you may need to alter your approach.
10.
DO NOT GIVE UP! A great many home businesses fail simply because their owners got discouraged and “threw in the towel” too early. Grit and determination are two of the key traits common to all successful business people. “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!“
